Came across this in a well known newspaper:
JACKIE CHAN CLEANS UP HAMPI!
The crowd here was spell bound. They saw action star Jackie Chan in action on Thursday. While shooting for the film ‘The Myth’, the Martial Arts king found garbage strewn near the Stone Car. He collected all the garbage and piled it in the corner in a no-nonsense manner.
With disgust on his face, he said: “Don’t you know the importance of historical monuments? Can’t you keep them clean? The crowd had no answer. It was a lesson they won’t forget in a hurry.
But this did not deter them from rushing forward to have a glimpse of the star. Jackie Chan himself was astounded…
Stanley Stone, the director of the film said that the script had been written to suit the locations of Hampi. He said he was amazed by the beautiful monuments here.
But then, we don’t know how to preserve our own heritage. We treat it as rubbish!
I was shaking with anger when I read this article. This is the plight we have reduced to. A foreign actor teaching us that we have to keep our monuments and artifacts clean.
And we, like fools, accept this with passive compliance.
OK, so Jackie Chan truly played a heroic role by cleaning up the garbage. That was highly commendable of him. Do we see other actors even attempting to do this? Stars like Shah Rukh, Hrithik, Aishwarya Rai won’t even come close to that pile of debris, leave alone cleaning it up, lest their image be spoilt.
But even then, why do we always let ourselves be thrown around with insults and lessons about how to look after our culture (even though we need such doses) and our heritage?
The worst thing was the damn reporter writing, “ But we don’t know how to preserve our own heritage. We treat it as rubbish!” As if the reporter was an American or any other foreigner that he had the right to view it as an outsider. He might have, at any point done the same thing by throwing garbage on the streets, which is nothing better. The insolence!
This problem gets infested even in the urban areas. That’s what is so irksome. The authorities don’t even want to solve such problems by putting more disposal cans in all the areas of this city. But they don’t mind doing superficial work, i.e., tarring and re-tarring the roads near the Vidhan Soudha whenever any foreign delegate comes and doing some so-called sweeping on the routes these foreign delegates are likely to travel. (E.g. the route to electronics city, etc.). The suburbs are conveniently forgotten.
The main problem is our attitude. We don’t want to attempt to bring about a change in anything. Everyday we go about our work like zombies, curse the traffic during jams, check out the latest sms on our mobile, do something in college/office and come back home. We have this “chalta hai” attitude, which has been ingrained in every Indian, who notices the deplorable state of practically everything, but attributes it to poor politics and the money-grabbing politicians, who fail to evoke any feeling of patriotism in our hearts. That is what is lacking. We don’t have any role model to look up to, nor do we have the feeling of being an Indian, that existed among our forefathers during the freedom struggle. We don’t have the guts to stand up a foreigner like Jackie Chan and say that our was a great country once upon a time because we know that we have done a wrong by deprecating the value of our own monuments, a symbol of our cultural munificence.
And we want to become a Super Power. Not entirely impossible, given the wonders our population can do and given the motivation. But at present, it seems to be darkness at the beginning of a very large tunnel, where the light at the end alone can give us some solace.

I am a sweet person, sorely misunderstood.
